Alif2.fr: Coins of the Almohad dynasty
(524-668 A.H. / 1130-1269 A.D.)
The Almohad dynasty takes its origin from the doctrine of Ibn Tumart who was a religious reformer. Ibn Tumart pretended to be Al Mahdi (a prominent figure in Islamic eschatology) and he has convinced his disciple `Abd al Mumin ben `Ali to revolt against the ruling Almoravids.
The Almohads claimed for the Caliphate and they ruled in Northwest Africa and Spain. A reference to Al Mahdi is inscribed on most of their coins (as their motto "Al Mahdi Imamuna" (Al Mahdi is our guide) which can also be found on Hafsid coins, see (Hohertz) p. 58). However, Al Mahdi's doctrine was rejected by the last Almohad Caliphs.
